Position Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Battery Management Systems Architect to lead the development of the BMS architecture for large-scale (multi-MWh) lithium-ion battery systems for the maritime industry. This individual contributor role is pivotal in shaping the next generation of safe, reliable, and high-performance battery systems for marine applications.
The Battery Management Systems Architect will work as a peer to the Leads of Electronics, Software, and Modeling & Control as a member of the Battery Management Modeling and Analytics leadership team.
Reports to: VP, Battery Management, Modeling and Analytics
Responsibilities:
- BMS Architecture Ownership - Establish the Battery Management System hardware and software architecture, ensuring scalability, safety, cybersecurity, and compliance with maritime standards. Own the BMS system-level documentation, including BMS functional description, network analysis, interface specifications, and safety analysis.
- Trade Studies - Conduct comprehensive trade studies to evaluate design alternatives, technologies, and system configurations. Provide data-driven recommendations to optimize performance, cost, and reliability.
- Requirements Definition - Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define and document BMS hardware and software requirements. Ensure traceability and alignment with customer and regulatory needs.
- Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) - Perform detailed FMEA to identify potential failure modes, assess risks, and implement mitigation strategies across hardware and software components.
- Functional Safety - Lead the implementation of functional safety precepts in the BMS.
- Test Case Development - Design and document robust test cases for validation and verification of BMS functionality, including edge cases and fault scenarios.
- System Integration Support - Work closely with hardware, software, and mechanical engineering teams to ensure seamless integration of BMS components into the overall battery system.
Education and Work Experience:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field.
- 7+ years of experience in BMS development, preferably in high-voltage or large-scale battery systems.
- Experience with model-based systems engineering (MBSE).
- Experience with Linux in industrial control systems.
- Experience with simulation tools (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink).
- Experience with Functional Safety methodologies and standards.
- Experience with FMEA tools and methodologies
Functional Skills:
- Strong understanding of lithium-ion battery chemistry and safety mechanisms.
- Proficiency in system architecture design, embedded systems, and control algorithms.
- Skilled at creating accurate and understandable diagrams, including system software architecture diagrams, data flow diagrams, and network topology diagrams.
- Familiarity with maritime industry standards and environmental constraints is a plus.
Behavioral Skills:
- Excellent communication and documentation skills.
- Strong relationship/interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Salary Range: $100,000 to $125,000 CDN per annum
